Your Guide To: A Girl’s Night Out

Now more than ever, people are learning to appreciate time with their loved ones – special shoutout to the girls that always have your back. We learn time and time again that boys come and go, but your girls are forever. In celebration of this love, dinner and drinks are almost a ritual for us, and what better time to show off your best outfits in the comfort of your own ‘family’. Here is your guide to a classy dinner and drinks night out with the girls.

  1. Tops

When picking out an outfit, I usually match my top to the rest of the outfit – it will, more likely than not, be the first thing someone notices about your outfit. If you’re anything like me, a bold, statement top is essential to making an interesting outfit. Sure tight, skin-fitting, revealing tops can make you come off more scandalous and sexy, but what about checking all those criterias without having to be revealing? To create a classy yet mysterious look, try to experiment with tops that have different silhouettes, different materials and different patterns. Make your priority how clothing moves with your body rather than the amount of skin you show. That, with a combination of the right colours and materials can do so much more for your outfit than a tight, stiff top will do.

2. Bottoms

And with your top, of course you will need bottoms. If you’re more of a plain top, funky bottom kind of girl, make the statement piece your bottoms! Depending on the weather, you can go for a short or skirt look – play with different lengths, colours, materials and match them with contrasting materials from your top. Or, if you’re out in the winter time, definitely opt for warmer options like denim. Remember, denim comes in all shapes, sizes, and colours so try to play around it! If you’re looking to add some interest to your jeans, bedazzling them with embellishments or adding waist scarves are always a way to switch it up a bit!

3. Dresses

If you’re neither a statement top or statement bottom girl, perhaps we could interest you in a dress? In my opinion, dresses are most classy when they aren’t body-con and plain black. In order to find the dress that’s right for you, I'd recommend dressing to your body type. This way, proportions will even out and that dress you have will look 10x more stunning because they compliment your body rather than work against it. Colours, materials and silhouette play a larger role in your confidence than you would think. And to that end, it’s time to build on that all black dress pile you have in your closet and experiment with some patterns and colours!

4. Heels

Continuing on, obviously, you will need shoes to pair with your outfit. Often underestimated, shoes can make or break it – so it would be wise to choose carefully. Being a heel girlie myself, I often reach for a comfortable pair of simple, but elegant, black pumps just for ease. However, depending on the occasion and the outfit itself, I try to push myself to experiment with different colours, patterns and different variations of the heel – animal prints, suede, kitten heels, contrasting colours. In the winter, if the weather allows, my go-to outfit for a girl’s night out is often a pair of lacy tights paired with knee high boots—the lace tights being the statement piece. Often paired with a coat, boots and ankle boots can go a long way for an outfit.

5. Handbag

Here, we start adding complexity and layering to an outfit. A bag, despite just being one of many accessories to an outfit, has potential to become a statement piece in itself. As someone who loves thrifting, you’ll most often find the most interesting bags at the thrift – even if they look a bit questionable on the shelf, you will never know until you try it on. Also, if you find your outfit isn’t as punchy and impactful as you’d hoped, maybe a special bag can save you. Experimenting with bags that hold different shapes, made with different materials – for example, a change from a bag made from soft leather to harder, sturdier leather, can change the whole emotion of a look.

6. Jewellery & Accessories

Now, for finishing touches before you head out the door – jewellery. I’m a firm believer that jewellery can only ever elevate an outfit, and never worsen. Most of us have an everyday stack – a pair of earrings we wear everyday, bracelets, necklaces and rings we never take off – this is a great starting point. However, in order to use jewellery to its advantage (to make a statement) it is essential to experiment with bold, accent jewellery to make your outfit look finished and complete – the funkier the better. Just like handbags, a great place to find statement, unique  jewellery pieces is the thrift!

7. Hair

Depending on who you are, hair may or may not be a priority for you. But if it is, and you’re looking for inspiration for fun hairstyles to try on your next night out, look no further. It is important to first determine the type of hair you have to ensure you pick a style that works for you. If your outfit carries lots of visual weight on your top half, perhaps a cleaner look might complement your outfit better than if your hair was down; try french pins to get your hair out of your face, or a stylized messy bun. If you’re looking for a hair down option, switching it up from your usual would be something to play with – if you have curly or wavy hair, try it straight, or vice versa. Half up half down is always a favourite of mine – versatile, quick and natural.
