Maximizing Your Closet Space: Organization tips to make the most out of your existing wardrobe

Maximising your closet can be hard especially when you don’t have much space to begin with so here are some simple tips to help you make the most out of what you have.

If it’s not in season put it in storage

While it might seem simple it will make the biggest difference in the amount of space you have to work with. If you’re not going to wear it for a while pack it away in a tub under your bed or a box in your garage or anywhere that is out of the way. As it starts to warm up, take your winter jackets and some jumpers and put them in storage. As summer starts to come to an end you can swap out your dresses, tops, and swimwear for your jackets and warmer clothing items. It will free up space to allow you to actually see the pieces you own and will make it easier to organise what you have.

Organise things in a way that works for your style

When you’re starting to organise your clothes it helps to come up with a plan of attack for where you want to put everything and what goes with what. For me, I separate all of my sports and workout clothes from my normal clothes because I rarely wear those two things together. This saves me time when I'm getting dressed as I don’t have to dig through gym tanks to find that one T-shirt I’m looking for. If you only ever wear either all-black or bright colours, you can split up your clothes that way. If you only ever wear t-shirts with jeans and tank tops with skirts, split them up that way. Finding a solution that works best for you is key to saving time and making the most out of the space.

Arrange things so you can see them

If you have drawers or shelves it’s easy to just throw things in there but if you take a little extra time to fold everything you will have a much better time getting dressed and knowing what you have. Instead of stacking t-shirts vertically, for example, put them in drawers horizontally so you can always see what is in there.

Get rid of clothing you don’t wear

Much easier said than done but editing out your closet will be a massive help in saving space in your wardrobe for the items you love and wear on repeat! There are so many ways to start but here are my two favourites. If you can’t handle going through your closet and doing a purge because you want to hold onto sentimental pieces you could turn all of your hangers backwards but when you wear something put it back the right way. After a few months, you will have an instant idea of what you actually wear and what you can get rid of. Another idea is when you go through your clothes put everything you don’t wear into a suitcase to put away and not look at for six months. It will make it easier to be harsher on what you do and don’t wear as it’s not actually going anywhere so you can always get it back if you need it. Go back through these clothes after a couple of months and then you won’t feel so attached to what's in there and odds are you won’t even remember having half of it.

Use dividers in drawers and on shelves

In any home goods store you will be able to find countless shelf and drawer dividers which can be super helpful if you don’t have plenty of space to work with. Making extra compartments for your shorts, dresses and pants is a great way to maximise the space you have. It will also help you stay more on top of the organisation of your wardrobe.

Have the same amount of hangers as pieces in your wardrobe

I am definitely guilty of this, but having an endless supply of coat hangers is not necessary. It clutters up any hanging space you have and just gets in the way. Taking out the hangers you don’t use and putting them in storage is a great way to save space, and without looking at empty hangers all day you won’t feel as though you have an empty cupboard and need to buy a whole new wardrobe to fill it.
