Meet Our Community Members: Estelle

Hi everyone! I’m Estelle. An A Style Set Editorial Intern and a Media and Design student at Sydney’s University of New South Wales (UNSW). A spontaneous yet meticulous, type-A Scorpio, whose dream is to move overseas and work with the biggest fashion houses in Europe. On the rare occasion that I'm not at my laptop writing up an assignment, you can find me at one of 3 places: at a cozy cafe, 3 hours into a deep conversation with my closest friends, on a run around the park, or getting a serious sunburn after accidentally falling asleep at the beach on a hot day.

Where i’m from

Born and raised in Hong Kong, but moved to Sydney, Australia in 2020!

How I got into fashion

It wasn’t until I moved to Australia that I found a love for all things fashion. Prior to moving to Australia, I was convinced a 9-5 job at a firm would be in the cards for me, but I was so wrong. A summer course at the Whitehouse Institute of Design was all it took to declare creativity as my strongest suit (maths stood no chance). There, I was introduced to so many hands-on skills–sketching, collaging, photography, styling–that set the path for the rest of my university career. Also, my hobby for people watching definitely comes in handy when I need inspiration.

how i’d describe my style

Having lived in multiple places in my life, my fashion style is definitely all over the place, but if I had to narrow it down, I would definitely say I’m loving the European style at the moment. Having just come back from a year on exchange, the Europeans have definitely had an impact on my style. I now enjoy looser fitting clothes, and I'm never afraid to try new things–shawls, micro-shorts, Havaianas–you name it, I've tried it all!

I’m also always a sucker for anything vintage; bring me into any vintage store and we will not leave until I’ve touched and admired every piece in there. My go-to outfit, however, will always be denim jeans and a white top. Note that I never said plain white top–there are so many tops in white that can elevate an outfit, tees aren’t the only option. So simple, so versatile, so classic, possibilities of styling are endless!

MY FAVOURITE TRENDS

1. ballet flats

I cannot get over ballet flats at the moment, and I hope they never go out of style. I remember growing up, I would refuse to leave the house in anything that resembled a ballet flat, but now I don’t think I could live without them. They bring a feminine touch to anything you wear, and they go with literally everything–you can never go wrong with flats. I have a pair of suede navy ones that I bought just last year and they’re almost worn out because I wear them everyday, no matter the occasion. I’m in the process of expanding to more exciting colours and patterns, here are just a few on my watchlist…

2. Napoleon jackets

I also am in love with Napoleon jackets at the moment. There are so many different types in different colours and I think I just really need my wardrobe to be filled with them. I managed to snag one at a flea market in Copenhagen and it is my favourite go-to jacket for the winter. It is so warm and so stylish. It goes with everything!

MY GO TO STYLE ITEMS

1. VINTAGE BELTS

Usually to spice up plain outfits, throwing on a statement vintage belt does the trick. They add so much personality and they accentuate body proportions in your outfit.

2. BOLD jewellery

I only ever get my accessories when thrifting or, my favourite, at flea markets. If I find something I like (at a reasonable price), I will buy it immediately, there is no stopping me. Styling is a later issue.

3. HEELS

I cannot stress this enough, every girl needs a pair of staple pumps. Heels are my go-to shoe for going out past dark. My favourite way to wear them is under a long pair of dark jeans. Admittedly, I’m still on the hunt for the perfect pair, but the one I tried on at Tony Bianco the other day might just be the one.

4. A WHITE DRESS

Everyone loves a little black dress, but for me? A white dress please. I’ve been collecting white dresses for the longest time, I have one for almost every occasion and you should too!

5. DRESS SHIRT

When the weather is right, a dress shirt is my go-to. For where to buy them, I usually prefer vintage stores where the options are infinite–so many colours, silhouettes, cuts, etc. Don’t just look at the women's section too! The men’s section usually has more options. I buy them oversized and wear them tucked in one side with the sleeves rolled up. This outfit goes best with a pair of straight-leg denim jeans and loafers. Put together, but not too serious: the perfect in-between.
