Meet Our Community Members: Kacie

Hi! I’m Kacie, an Editorial Intern at A Style Set and a rising junior at Syracuse University, where I’m majoring in magazine journalism. When I’m not writing my next story or running between classes, you’ll probably find me wandering NYC with my roommate, soaking in every second before we head back upstate. I love all things creative. If I could spend everyday exploring art museums, fabric hunting in the garment district, or dropping into a dance class, I would. In other words, dream job #1: writing for Vogue. Dream job #2: dancing with the Rockettes. Who says you can’t do both?

WHERE I’M FROM:

Chicago, Illinois

(Just kidding I’m from the suburbs but I don’t usually mention that part)

How I Got into Fashion:

Growing up I liked fashion, but just as much as any other girl. Believe it or not, my grandma was the fashion icon that made it something I loved. When I was in middle school (fed by a slight Project Runway obsession) she taught me how to sew. We would spend hours flipping through patterns at JoAnn’s and sewing new pieces until I had a brand new wardrobe. Some of my favorite memories with her are spent in front of her sewing machine and I’m excited for a career in fashion to make her proud.

Here’s us at my senior year homecoming dance in a dress I made.

My OOTD:

As a girl who spends a lot of time in the windy city and upstate New York, it’s safe to say when it’s warm enough to shed some layers, I’m thrilled. This summer, when it seems like every day in New York feels like 105°F, I like to keep it as cool as possible. My go-to outfit has been a light linen skirt and crochet tube top, usually paired with a breezy flip flop kitten heel and my everyday purse.

HOW I’D DESCRIBE MY STYLE:

One thing about my style is that it changes every day. While 90% of the time you’ll find me in my favorite low-waisted jeans and tank top, I’m always a sucker for a statement piece. Whether that’s a floral skirt, thrifted poncho, or a pop of metallic, it’s safe to say I’ll never check just one box. I think the coolest thing when it comes to fashion is that every day you get to decide who you want to be. One day I’m feeling bright Y2K and the next I might want to layer all my boho favorites. Fashion isn’t one and done, it’s constantly evolving and changing everyday.

Trends I’m Seeing in My City:

All over Chicago and New York I’m seeing linen sets, lace trims, and lots of pastels. Think Euro-summer meets coastal aesthetic. Babydoll tops, ballet flats, head scarfs, and button ups are everywhere. Easy, breezy, and perfect for every occasion, from a day trip to the beach to brunch in the city.

CURRENT FASHION FAVORITE:

Poncho tops are my go-to piece this summer. They provide the comfort of a t-shirt with the style of a cardigan and they’re perfect for any occasion. Wear one as a shirt on a hot summer day or layer over a dress on a chilly night. With the option to easily dress up and down there are so many ways to wear them. Best of all, poncho tops aren’t something new. As they come back into style there are so many great options available in thrift stores, giving you the chance to give a piece a new life and save a few dollars.

What’s On My Wishlist:

Inspired by Miu Miu, my latest obsession in my shopping cart is a pair of gym shoe ballet flats. The perfect combination of the ease and versatility of a sneaker with the dressed up look of a flat. Equal parts practical and polished, they strike the perfect balance between off-duty comfort and elevated style. It’s the kind of piece that adds a subtle statement to even the simplest look.

MY FASHION MUSE:

You know those days where you stare into your closet with zero ideas and zero inspiration. Those are the days I always find myself opening Taylor’s Instagram. Her style is the perfect mix of comfy-casual and upscale-unique. She is a master of layering and has a way of pairing together pieces you would never expect.

FAVORITE PART ABOUT INTERNING AT A STYLE SET:

My summer at A Style Set has been an opportunity I will never forget. Writing weekly blogs has allowed me to take a deeper dive into the fashion community while developing my technical skills and my voice as a writer. From pitching articles, to trend research, even to the editing and publishing process, every day has been an incredible learning experience and I am so grateful to the Style Set community and this amazing opportunity.
