How to Dress like the #DancersofTiktok
Layers, layers, and more layers! It’s been a running gag in the dancer community that dancers, mainly in the hip-hop space, tend to over-dress. This style emphasizes the versatility of clothing and how you don’t always have to wear clothes the traditional way. Back in September of 2025, professional dancers in LA went viral on TikTok for their outfits, with non-dancers mimicking their style choices. Dancing is all about flow, rhythm, and beat, and you need comfortable and breathable clothing to help accent every move. Dancers draw inspiration from streetstyle, so while the professional dancers of the west coast love to add some flare, there are a few basics to the style. (Being a dancer is not a requirement to enjoy this trend!)
Zip-ups, hoodies, & sweaters
Surprisingly, despite how hot it gets in dance studios, a lot of dancers choose to wear hoodies and sweaters over a tank top or tee when dancing. However these pieces tend to migrate off their shoulders and onto their waist as a class goes on. A zip-up hoodie is a bulkier look that is perfect for hip-hop, but it can be extremely hot. So a lot of dancers choose boleros or knit sweaters which are so much lighter and easier to dance in. They look even better when worn around the waist, layered on top of low-rise pants. They help exaggerate hip movements which is perfect for when you want to throw it in a circle.

2. Baggy tops
Oversized t-shirts, jerseys, and crops are the perfect top layer to a dance look. It won’t make you too hot while still providing enough coverage. A lot of dancers tend to tuck, tie, or cut their t-shirts to fit their style, creating dimension. Cutting the neckline of a top and letting it slip off your shoulder to show the strap of a sports bra can be more comfortable than a regular tee. A graphic design or a colorful jersey can be the statement of your fit.

3. baggy pants
Baggy pants have become a staple to every fashion trend and this one is no different. The low rise wide leg style of pants adds extra movement and flow to a routine. They are also a lot more comfortable than regular straight-leg pants, making them easier to dance in. Traditional sweatpants are always the go to, but cargo pants or parachute pants can be more breathable. Like the trend you can roll up one, and only one, pant leg when you get hot. Basketball shorts can be a sportier option perfect for warmer weather, giving more range of movement and some swaggy chic.

4. bikini tops, sports bras, & Tanks
Imagine you’re in a small dance studio filled with 30 other people, no windows and one small fan that barely keeps one of you cool. You’re gonna want to wear one final layer that you can strip down to underneath your t-shirt and sweater, a tank top, sports bra, or bikini top. These choices are lightweight and easy to dance in, giving you full range of movement. Choosing the right material, it will provide the support without wearing an uncomfortable bra and won’t be soaked in sweat. Layered underneath a t-shirt or tank, a sports bra or bikini top can be a stylish way to add a pop of color while also being convenient.

5. Baseball caps & Bandanas
Headwear is the perfect way to add some flare and swag to a dance fit. Most people choose a snapback because it can hide your eyes which draws more attention to your dance moves rather than your face, adding a cool mysterious aura to a look. But beanies and scarves/bandanas is an added layer of design and style to a look. Rather than traditionally wearing a hat or scarf on your head, you can tie it to the belt loops of your pants or tuck it into your waistband to exaggerate your dance moves. Choosing a bold color or design for your headwear adds a pop of your personal style.

6. sneakers & Heels
A good pair of shoes is the difference between dancing like water or like a robot. Every dancer is different in what they look for in good dance shoes, but everyone typically wants a shoe that is lightweight, flexible, and the perfect amount of grip to do smooth turns. Some dancers choose chunky sneakers that add a couple of inches, while some dancers like a flat shoe to be grounded. For sexier dances, heels are the perfect move to create prettier lines while also strengthening your calves.
