Meet Our Community Members: Sarah Campbell

Hi, I’m Sarah Campbell, an Editorial Intern at A Style Set and a sophomore at Duke University, majoring in Psychology. When I’m not rotting at the on-campus cafe or scrolling through Pinterest, you can find me taking pilates and yoga classes, working on the Substack I run for Duke Business of Retail Society (TopShelf!), our student fashion club, collaging, watercoloring, playing golf, or trying and rating almond croissants.

Where I’m From:

Columbia, South Carolina

HOW I GOT INTO FASHION:

I really developed my style once I got to college. In high school, the standard outfit was always random t-shirts, sweats, and bright colored athletic wear. I knew this was never me, but I wasn’t confident enough to explore my style– and I had no idea where to start, especially being from a mid-sized Southern town where the best option was Urban Outfitters.

Before coming to Duke, I decided to finally start buying clothes and investing in my style. It is always a risk– and I certainly made some outfit mistakes when I started building my personal aesthetic. However, developing my own sense of style has been incredibly rewarding and makes me excited to wake up each day. Realizing that one can dress well and uniquely without having to be from an urban place or having a huge budget is something I’m really passionate about, and so I’ve loved being able to promote this through my work at A Style Set. It’s never too late to start or to totally redefine your aesthetic!

MY OOTD:

It’s hard to pick just one! My basic outfit formula is chunky loafers and crew socks (always) with a pair of dark wash, baggy jeans, a frilly feminine white top, a funky belt, and a cardigan or a leather jacket layered over. As I’ve developed my style, I’ve tried to build up a good rotation of basics and I enjoy adding in accessories to make my outfits unique. Having a variety of shoe and belt options is a must. I also tend to gravitate to a general color palette of browns, blues, reds, and neutrals, with the occasional pop of butter yellow.

FAVORITE TREND:

I’m loving the prevalence of lace elements I’m seeing all over my feed. Feminine and slightly sexy, it adds an element of interest to any outfit without being too tacky or micro-trendy. Loving the look of stain pants edged with lace or the asymmetrical hems as either a full look or a layer under a sweater.

MY GO-TO STYLE ITEMS:

  1. CANADIAN TUXEDO

The most effortless, cool girl look ever. Catch me in different variations of this a few days a week.

2. burgundy accents

Burgundy and light blue is my favorite color combination, so I love collecting burgundy accent colors to pair with everything. I find burgundy to be a nice pop of color while still being chic and sophisticated (and bonus, it looks great with denim!).

3. Gingham/plaid print

I love how ginghams are classic– adding a bit of texture to an outfit while still being versatile and easy to style with many different pieces. I recommend sticking with ginghams/plaids in the red or blue range.

4. loafers and socks

One of my best style-related compliments was when my friend told me I inspired her to buy a pair of loafers. I’m a big believer that loafers go with literally anything– and they are more comfortable than you might think!

I love wearing fun socks, whether a surprise pop of color under a pair of jeans or a white ruffle-y pair with a skirt or dress.

5. vintage watches

A dainty, vintage-inspired watch is one of my favorite accessories! I love the element of subtle classiness and elegance it gives to every outfit. I’m more of a gold jewelry girl, but there are so many pretty silver and mixed-metal options out there too.
